On Saturday 30 May, Premier League winners Arsenal face favourites Paris Saint-Germain in UEFA Champions League final in Budapest, Hungary – the biggest game of the European football season. Paris are bidding to become only the second club in the Champions League era to successfully defend their title. Arsenal plan to hold their Premier League trophy parade in north London, just one day after the match.

Westminster parliament returns from Whitsun recess on Monday 1 June when Post Office IT scandal campaigner, Sir Alan Bates, will give evidence to MPs in their government compensation schemes inquiry. Lords economic committee will hear from Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey on Tuesday 2 June. Next week could also see the release of a batch of documents relating to Peter Mandelson’s ambassadorial appointment. 

British foreign secretary Yvette Cooper is expected to travel to China on 2 and 3 June. She will hold talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi before visiting the southern tech hub of Shenzhen for meetings with businesses. The trip follows Keir Starmer’s “relationship reset” visit to the China in January. 

World Report: 

US Congressional hearings on the 2027 budget continue in Washington. Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, will appear before House and Senate committees on 2 – 3 June, where questions will also include ‘America First’ foreign policy. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent will also face members.

Colombia will hold a presidential election on 31 May. Incumbent Gustavo Petro, elected in 2022, can’t seek a consecutive second term, and Iván Cepeda of Historic Pact has been chosen as the left-wing candidate. Right-leaning Paloma Valencia is his main challenger, in a campaign marred by political violence. If no candidate secures over 50%, a runoff will take place on 21 June.

Russia hosts the annual St Petersburg International Economic Forum from 3 – 6 June. Established in 1997, it brings together politicians, business leaders, officials and experts from Russia and over 100 countries. This year Saudi Arabia is the guest country; and President Vladimir Putin the main speaker.

Soccer Aid takes place at the London Stadium on 31 May. Players taking part in the 20th anniversary match, in aid of UNICEF, include Wayne Rooney, Jill Scott, Olly Murs, Tom Hiddleston, Chris O’Dowd, Jack Whitehall, GK Barry, Owen Cooper, Maisie Adam, Jordi Alba, Angry Ginge, Paddy McGuinness, Behzinga, Dimitar Berbatov and Richard Gadd.

SXSW London takes place at various London venues from 1 – 6 June. Speakers taking part in the festival include Michelle Obama, Piers Morgan, Sharon Horgan, Russell T Davies, Chelsea Clinton, Natalie Dormer, Ant & Dec, Mel B, Jamie Laing, Max Whitlock, Roman Kemp, Sophia Bush, Pete Wicks, Eddie Hearn, Joe Marler and Padma Lakshmi.

Boyzone play their biggest ever headline shows at the Emirates Stadium, London on 5 and 6 June. Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch perform in the worldwide exclusive “One For The Road” headline shows, their only shows of the year and their first performances since 2019, which will also pay tribute to bandmate Stephen Gately, who died in 2009.
