UK Report:

Harrods’ redress scheme for the survivors of alleged sexual abuse by Mohamed Al Fayed will close to new applicants on 31 March. More than 180 survivors of abuse are currently “engaged” in its compensation scheme, the company said in February, with compensation paid to more than 50 women already. Claimants can apply for general damages of up to £385,000.

On Monday 30 March, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will set out its approach to a multi-billion-pound motor insurance redress scheme. It is aimed at millions of consumers affected by mis-sold motor finance between 2007 and 2024. The FCA review found widespread failures to adequately disclose the existence and nature of commission and contractual ties between lenders and brokers.

The grooming gangs inquiry, chaired by Baroness Longfield, is expected to formally start on 31 March. It will investigate decades-long rape and exploitation of girls by Pakistani-heritage men. Earlier this month, the home secretary Shabana Mahmood said that the work will formally start in “a matter of weeks” once the probe’s terms of reference are finalised and formal hearings can begin.

World Report: 

NASA is targeting no earlier than 1 April for its Artemis II mission around the Moon. It will send US and Canadian astronauts on an approximately 10-day journey around the Moon. Among the objectives, the agency will test the Orion spacecraft’s life support systems for the first time with people and lay the groundwork for future crewed Artemis missions.

French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Japan and South Korea from 31 March – 3 April. He will hold talks in Tokyo with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and meet the emperor and empress. Macron’s South Korea visit comes at the invitation of President Lee Jae Myung, and will be the first visit by a French president to Seoul in 11 years.

Pope Leo XIV marks his first Holy Week as the head of the Catholic Church. He will take part in Palm Sunday celebrations in St. Peter’s Square on 29 March. On Holy Thursday, 2 April, the Pope celebrates the Chrism Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by Mass at St. John Lateran Basilica. On Good Friday, 3 April, the pontiff will preside over the service for the Lord’s Passion in St. Peter’s Basilica, and lead the traditional Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum, in one of the most widely followed ceremonies by the faithful in Rome.

The Cinematic Life of Boxing season opens at BFI Southbank, London on 30 March. Among those taking part in Q&As across the season, running until 30 April, are former boxer Barry McGuigan, actor and writer Johnny Harris, director Shane Meadows, actor Ray Winstone (via Zoom), former World Middleweight Champion Darren Barker and director Ryan Pickard. 

Paul Whitehouse will be joined by Charlie Higson, John Bishop, John Thomson, Joe Lycett, Alfie Boe, Simon Day, Jocelyn Jee Esien and Arabella Weir in the “Paul Whitehouse & Friends: All Star Comedy Gala”, hosted by Mel Giedroyc, at the London Palladium on 30 March. In support of the charity Pact.

Aaron Pierre, Giles Terera and Olivia Williams open in Dale Wasserman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” at the Old Vic, London on 1 April. The production, based on the novel by Ken Kesey and directed by Clint Dyer, is currently booking until 23 May 2026.
