The voters of Greater Manchester will head to the polls on Thursday, 30 July, to elect Andy Burnham’s replacement as Mayor of their strategic authority. The by-election will represent the first electoral test of PM Andy Burnham’s premiership. Labour candidate Bev Craig is the favourite expected to beat Reform UK’s Sian Astley, according to the latest polls.

On 30 July, the Bank of England will hold its July interest rates-setting meeting. In June, the Bank held interest rates at 3.75%. Whilst many economists still expect the Bank to hold the rates this month as well, the likelihood of rate rises has increased in recent days following renewed hostilities between the US and Iran.

The Commonwealth Games continue in Glasgow all next week. Adam Peaty-Ramsey begins his quest for another gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke heats on 24 July with the final on 25 July. Another Peaty-Ramsey appearance is likely in the 50m breaststroke final on 27 July. In netball, England and Australia will clash in the group stages on 26 July. In the cyclist Velodrome, the team sprint finals are due on 30 July. Velodrome drama continues on 31 July and 1 August as well.

The next meeting of the US Federal Reserve Open Market Committee takes place on 28 – 29 July. The previous meeting in June, Kevin Warsh‘s first as Fed Chair, resulted in a unanimous vote to keep interest rates steady. July’s interest rate decision will hinge on the usual trio of inflation trends, labour market momentum and overall financial conditions.

Brazil hosts the XXV International AIDS conference from 26 – 31 July. The theme for 2026 is ‘Rethink. Rebuild. Rise’. The conference is the world’s largest meeting dedicated to HIV and AIDS, bringing together researchers, policymakers, advocates, and people living with HIV. Issues include funding, cutbacks to HIV programmes, and new innovations in HIV prevention and treatment.

The 113th Tour de France cycling race concludes in Paris on 26 July. Whoever holds the Yellow Jersey after the penultimate stage is traditionally not challenged for the lead on the climactic sprint into Paris, allowing the champion to toast the crowds as they navigate the Champs-Élysées.

Josh Widdicombe, Nick Mohammed, Sam Campbell, Sara Pascoe, Dara Ó Briain, Ed Gamble, Tom Allen, Phil Wang, Rosie Jones and Michelle de Swarte are among the acts who will perform in the brand new Laughterama comedy festival at Somerset House, London from 29 July – 2 August. This will be the first time Somerset House has ever hosted comedy.

Director Taika Waititi takes part in a Q&A following a special 10th anniversary celebration screening of “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” at Picturehouse Central, London on 30 July. He will also introduce a second screening of the film.

West End Flea Market, in aid of Acting for Others, takes place at St Paul’s Church and Churchyard, Covent Garden on 25 July. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee, Sarah Hadland, Cassidy Janson, Lesley Joseph, Bonnie Langford, Simon Lipkin, Jodie Steele, Harriet Thorpe and Michael Xavier are among those signing autographs at the annual event where West End shows set up stalls with show-themed merchandise and memorabilia.
