UK Report:

New Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally will visit Rome from 25 – 28 April, meeting with Pope Leo. This will be the first meeting of the two since Mullally was confirmed as Archbishop. She has recently joined with the Pope in his calls for peace.

King Charles and Queen Camilla embark on a state visit to the United States from 27 – 30 April. The visit will mark the country’s 250th anniversary of independence. It will include a state dinner at the White House on 28 April and the King will deliver an address to Congress on 28 April.

The Princess of Wales will lay a wreath on Saturday 25 April, on behalf of King Charles during a parade ceremony at the Cenotaph in London, marking ANZAC Day. The commemoration marks the sacrifice of soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who served in the First and Second World Wars.

World Report: 

The US Federal Reserve will hold its next rate-setting meeting on 28 – 29 April in Washington. The meeting will be the last one chaired by Jerome Powell, the outgoing Fed chair, and it comes as Senators consider President Trump’s nominee Kevin Warsh to lead the US central bank.

The next Palestinian local authority elections are due on 25 April in both Gaza and the West Bank. It is the first poll since the start of the war in October 2023. According to a 2025 presidential decree, candidates must ‘commit to the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s programme’, conditions which been rejected by five Palestinian factions.

NASA Chief Jared Isaacman continues congressional testimony on the 2027 budget from 27 – 28 April. The sessions come after the successful Artemis II mission around the moon, which saw the crew surpass Apollo 13’s record for the farthest humans have travelled from Earth.  However, the US administration is proposing a budget that would reduce NASA’s overall spending allowance from $24.4 billion to $18.8 billion.

Comedian Maisie Adam hosts the BAFTA Television Craft Awards with Samsung OLED at The Brewery, London on 26 April. Among those nominated this year are Jack Thorne, Stephen Graham, Paris Lees, Daisy May Cooper, Steve Coogan, Alexandra Lacey, Chloe English, Philip Barantini and Sam Donovan.

Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam unveil a statue of fellow Monty Python member Terry Jones in his hometown of Colwyn Bay on the promenade between Porth Eirias and the pier on 25 April. The bronze statue depicts Jones in his role as The Nude Organist from “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”.

The 2026 TCS London Marathon takes place in the capital on 26 April. Celebrity runners due to take part this year include Cynthia Erivo, James Norton, Tony Adams, Laura Kenny, Aaron Ramsey, Sebastian Vettel, Jack O’Connell, Harry Judd, AP McCoy, Ore Oduba, Jenni Falconer, Tilly Ramsay and Alexandra Burke.
