UK Report:

Prime minister Keir Starmer is expected to face a Labour leadership challenge as early as next week. On 16 June, ex-health secretary Wes Streeting said he would be prepared to trigger the contest in the same week that Andy Burnham returns to the Commons, following his Makerfield by-election win. Dozens of Labour MPs called on Starmer to step down in May, but the formal contest has not been triggered yet.

The High Court will on 23 June hear a legal challenge that Andrew Tate is bringing against the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), with regard to its decision to bring charges against him. The claim relates to a Bedfordshire police investigation known as Operation Moonwalk. The Tate brothers face 21 criminal charges including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking.

England and Ghana will meet for the first time in a competitive fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026 on 23 June. The only previous game between the nations at men’s senior level came back in 2011 at Wembley Stadium. On 24 June Scotland will face Brazil, in Miami.

World Report: 

US President Donald Trump will kick off the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington on 24 June. It comes ahead of the Great American State Fair at the National Mall which starts a day later and celebrates culture of all US states and territories in the run up to 4 July.

The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions takes place in Dalian, China from 23 – 25 June, bringing together leaders from government, business and academia, along with innovators and representatives from international organizations, media and civil society. Also in China, the GSMA Mobile World Congress will be held in Shanghai from 24 – 26 June, with thousands of decision-makers in the mobile industry expected to attend.

The five-yearly UN High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS takes place at the UN Headquarters in New York from 22 – 23 June. It brings together member states to review progress on global HIV targets, negotiate a new Political Declaration, and establish the direction for the international AIDS response, under the motto, ‘United to end AIDS‘.

Foo Fighters play their only UK stadium shows this year on their “Take Cover Tour” at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool on 25 and 27 June. With special guests Inhaler and Otoboke Beaver on 25 June and Royel Otis and Die Spitz on 27 June.

Sam Ryder makes his West End stage debut in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the London Palladium on 20 June. The production, currently booking at the theatre until 5 September ahead of an extension at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 16 October 2026, sees Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Armitage, Boy George, Layton Williams and Julian Clary share the role of King Herod.

The Everywhere At Once festival takes place at hundreds of UK grassroots venues from 26 – 28 June. Becky Hill, Fatboy Slim, Rizzle Kicks, Tinie Tempah, Brooke Combe, D Double E and Gene are among the acts who will perform in the UK-wide live music weekend from Music Venue Trust and The National Lottery that brings the festival season to grassroots venues across the country.
