UK Report:
Chancellor John Healey will deliver his first budget of PM Andy Burnham’s government on 28 October. Announcing the key financial statement of the year, Healey previously said it will be a “tough budget” which will be “built on fiscal discipline” and “promote growth”. Many commentators expect him to announce significant tax rises. Office for Budget Responsibility releases its economic and fiscal forecasts for UK economy on the budget day as well.
On 26 October, Anthony Williams, 33, will go on trial at Cambridge Crown Court charged with attempted murder after multiple people were stabbed on a train travelling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on 1 November last year. Williams is charged with 13 counts of attempted murder, which also relate to other alleged attacks.
Britain’s most famous shopping road, Oxford Street, will become partially traffic free from 26 October. Cars, buses, taxis and bikes will be banned from almost a kilometre stretch from Orchard Street to Great Portland Street. Once pedestrianised, there are plans for more trees and greenery to be installed.
World Report:
The second round presidential run-off takes place in Brazil on 25 October. On 4 October, right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ party, by 47 per cent to 45 per cent. Polls point to a close race between the challenger and the incumbent, with Lula seeking a fourth non-consecutive term.
The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee meets in Beijing from 26-29 October. The session will be chaired by Xi Jinping, the CPC general secretary, and some 300 senior party officials will approve a blueprint for strengthening the CPC’s governance. It will probably be the last substantive gathering of the Party’s top brass before 2027’s Party Congress.
Israel holds a general election on 27 October, the first since the deadly Hamas attack in October 2023. While incumbent PM Benjamin Netanyahu, leading the ruling Likud party, is vying to hold onto the premiership, polls suggest Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party will emerge with the most seats, likely to give Eisenkot a first shot at forming a coalition.
