A meeting will take place on 14 September between the nationalist parties’ leaders governing UK’s devolved administrations in Cardiff. The gathering will include SNP’s John Swinney, Plaid Cymru’s Rhun Ap Iorwerth, and Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O’Neill. They will discuss “shared interests and the people’s right to self-determination“. 

The Thirlwall Inquiry, a public inquiry into how former nurse Lucy Letby was able to commit crimes at a neo-natal unit, is set to publish its final report on 15 September, in Liverpool. Letby was sentenced to 15 whole life terms after being convicted of killing seven babies and trying to kill seven more at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neo-natal unit between June 2015 and June 2016.

The 158th Trades Union Congress (TUC) will be held in Brighton from 13 – 16 September. Union delegates from 47 unions – representing more than 5.3 million workers – will meet to discuss key issues including employment rights and AI. Housing secretary Angela Rayner will speak on 14 September with another senior government minister addressing the event on 15 September.

US President Donald Trump will visit Ireland on 12 – 13 September. He will be welcomed by a guard of honour, and his itinerary includes meetings in Dublin with the President, Catherine Connolly, and the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin. Mr Trump will visit his luxury golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, which is hosting the star-studded Amgen Irish Open.

The next BRICS Leaders’ Summit will be held in India on 12 – 13 September, under the motto, ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.’ Leaders from the five member states Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will gather in New Delhi, together with additional members including Egypt, Indonesia and Iran, whose President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend the summit.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, gives the annual ‘State of the European Union‘ speech at European Parliament in Strasbourg on 16 September, setting her priorities for the year ahead. It will be attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who becomes the first foreign head of government to attend the speech, and he will address MEPs following day.

Jack Dee celebrates 40 years in comedy with a gala show, in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice and The North London Hospice and in memory of Jeremy Hardy and Sean Lock, at the London Palladium on 18 September. With special guests Jo Brand, Seann Walsh, Harry Hill, Mark Steel, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan and Alex Horne and The Horne Section.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bernardine Evaristo, Emma Gannon, Celia Imrie, Denise Gough, Asa Butterfield, Tamsin Greig and Fiona Shaw are among the guests taking part in the Chelsea Arts Festival, a four-day celebration of modern storytelling for London, at various London venues including Cadogan Hall, Royal Court Theatre, Saatchi Gallery and Duke of York Square from 16 – 20 September.

Chris Kamara, Ben Shephard, Joe Wicks, Richard Whitehead, Peter Reid, Helen Skelton, Jake Quickenden, Sophie Raworth and Adele Roberts are among the celebrities who will take part in the AJ Bell Great North Run in Newcastle on 13 September. The half marathon begins in Newcastle’s city centre on the A167 and ends on the coast in South Shields.
