UK Report:
Prince Harry and Megan Markle will continue their visit to Australia next week. The Sussexes are in the country for a number of private, business and philanthropic engagements. Megan will be joining a retreat event organised by the Her Best Life podcast from 17 – 19 April with the price tag to attend starting at £1,400. Harry is due to speak at a mental health summit in Melbourne on 16 April.
The terms of the long-awaited grooming gangs inquiry will be laid before Parliament as it returns from its recess on Monday 13 April. The chair of the inquiry, Baroness Longfield, vowed to “not flinch from uncomfortable truths”. The inquiry will examine institutions such as police forces and local authorities that failed to protect children and whether “the ethnicity, culture, or religion of either perpetrators or victims influenced patterns of offending, and whether these factors shaped the institutional response”.
UK Covid-19 inquiry will publish its report on vaccines and therapeutics on Thursday 16 April. It will focus on lessons learned and preparedness for the next pandemic. It will also make recommendations relating to the development of Covid-19 vaccines and the implementation of the vaccine rollout.
World Report:
A parliamentary election will be held in Hungary on 12 April. After four successive victories, populist-nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is facing his strongest challenge yet to his two-decade grip on power. A number of polls have showed the opposition Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar, ahead of the ruling coalition.
Pope Leo XIV undertakes an apostolic journey to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea from 13 – 23 April. In his third such trip since the beginning of his pontificate, Leo will travel nearly 18,000 km to visit 11 cities and towns. In each country he will meet political and religious leaders, and lead prayer services and Masses.
The spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank take place in Washington from 13 – 18 April. The annual meetings bring together central bankers, ministers of finance, private sector executives, and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development and aid effectiveness.

Nick Mohammed hosts the 50th Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 12 April. Presenters at the ceremony include Minnie Driver, David Harewood, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Ambika Mod, Richard Osman, Russell Tovey, Olivia Williams and Vanessa Williams. Mark Gatiss makes his RSC debut in Stephen Sharkey’s translation of Bertolt Brecht’s “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on 11 April. The production, also starring Janie Dee, Rebekah Hinds and Christopher Godwin, is currently booking until 30 May 2026.
Ben Bailey Smith (aka Doc Brown) hosts the Jazz FM Awards at KOKO, London on 16 April. Van Morrison will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony. Nominees this year include Raye, Mavis Staples, Emma-Jean Thackray, Ezra Collective, Nate Smith, Poppy Daniels, Kokoroko and Samara Joy.
