UK Report:

The government is expected to unveil its long-delayed £18bn-worth military spending plan by 11 June. The 10-year defence investment plan was originally due in the autumn of last year, and is expected to provide funding for extra ammunition, next-generation fast jets, drones, and new attack submarines to upgrade Britain’s war-fighting capabilities.

The first preliminary hearing of the public inquiry into the murder of prominent Belfast solicitor Patrick Finucane is set to take place in Belfast on Wednesday, 10 June. The 39-year-old was shot dead at his family home in north Belfast in 1989 by the Ulster Defence Association, in an attack found by a series of investigations to have involved collusion with agencies of the British government.

Four Palestine Action activists convicted, after a retrial, over a violent protest at an Israeli arms manufacturer’s UK site will be sentenced on Friday, 12 June. Although the action took place before Palestine Action was proscribed, the court will seek to add a ‘terrorism connection’ at sentencing. 

World Report: 

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens on 11 and 12 June. With 48 teams competing across the United States, Canada and Mexico, it will be the biggest tournament football has ever seen. FIFA will stage three separate opening ceremonies, with each host nation getting its own showcase ahead of its first match. Mexico’s opening ceremony will take place on 11 June, at the Estadio Azteca, followed on 12 June by Toronto and Los Angeles.

Pope Leo visits Spain from 6 –12 June. The first papal trip to the country in 15 years, it features stops in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands, and includes an open-air Corpus Christi Mass. He will also become the first pope in history to address a joint session of the Spanish Congress, and on 10 June, the Pontiff will preside at the inauguration of the Sagrada Família’s Tower of Jesus Christ.

A presidential runoff election takes place in Peru on 7 June. The first round in April saw right-wing Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, place first. She will face left wing candidate Roberto Sánchez who narrowly secured second place.

Paul McCartney celebrates the release of his latest album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane”, with a special in conversation event at the Roundhouse, London on 10 June. He will discuss the journey behind the creation of his first new solo record in over five years.

“White Rabbit Red Rabbit” returns to the West End, in its 15th anniversary year, at the Duchess Theatre, London from 8 June. Actors including David Tennant, Kunal Nayyar, Riz Ahmed, David Harewood, Jodie Whittaker, Asim Chaudhry, Lucian Msamati and Kathryn Hunter appear for one night in Nassim Soleimanpour’s theatrical experiment which is currently booking until 2 November 2026.
