The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues for England on 5 July as Three Lions face the tournament’s co-hosts Mexico in a last-16 tie. The match will take place at the Estadio Azteca, one of world football’s most famous venues. Located at more than 2,200 metres above sea level, and with significantly thinner air, the conditions are said to drain players’ energy more quickly.

PM Keir Starmer will attend the NATO summit in Ankara on 7 and 8 July. It will possibly be his last major diplomatic engagement before leaving the office as nominations open in the Labour leadership contest on 9 July.  Andy Burnham will likely have a clear run at the leadership and become the next PM by 20 July.

The Local Government Association (LGA) will hold its flagship annual conference in Bournemouth from 7 to 9 July. This year’s theme is “From neighbourhoods to nations – building lasting futures locally” with high profile speakers including: housing secretary Steve Reed, new health secretary John Murray, Green party leader Zack Polanski, Reform UK’s London mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham as well as Suella Braverman and more.

The next NATO summit takes place in Ankara on 7-8 July. Hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and chaired by the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the meeting will see leaders from some 30 countries, including US President Donald Trump, discuss defence spending, support for Ukraine and defence industrial production.

The United States celebrates its 250th Independence Day on 4 July. President Donald Trump will speak at ‘the greatest show of all’ on the National Mall, while across America 4 July fireworks fill the skies. In Washington, a 40-minute show will reportedly include more than 860,000 fireworks, and a ball will drop in Times Square in New York, similar to the New Year’s Eve drop.

The funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will begin in Tehran on 4 ⁠July, and he will be buried in his home town of Mashhad on 9 July. Khamenei, 86, was killed in a joint US-Israeli air strike on his compound in February. The burial will follow three days of funeral ceremonies in Tehran, and another in the holy city of Qom on 7 July.

Helen Hunt, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Pullman and Alfred Enoch open in Laura Wade’s new version of Anton Chekhov’s final play “The Cherry Orchard” at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on 10 July. The production, directed by Tamara Harvey, is currently booking until 29 August 2026.

Cast Simon Pegg, Siân Brooke, Hannah Khalique-Brown, writer Colin Teevan and creator Colin Callender take part in a Q&A at a TV preview screening of the second series of Channel 4 cyber-thriller “The Undeclared War” at BFI Southbank, London on 6 July. The series also stars Alex Jennings, Ed Stoppard, Danny Sapani and Chloe Pirrie.

The 50th O2 Silver Clef Awards, in aid of music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins, take place at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 9 July. Honourees this year are Lily Allen, P!NK, Ludovico Einaudi, Melanie C, Jessie J, James, Max Richter, Franz Ferdinand, Sam Fender, JADE, David Gray and Rachel Chinouriri.
