Following two weeks of “policy blitz” announcements, new Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to embark on a “listening tour of the UK” in early August. Burnham will travel across the country while Parliament is in recess. Among areas understood to be on his itinerary is the former steel making centre of Port Talbot in south Wales and Aberdeen – the UK’s oil and gas capital.

Train passengers are being warned to expect disruption from 3 August as a result of hot weather. Network Rail said that soil under long stretches of the railway in East Anglia had dried out and shrunk, causing the track to drop in places and become uneven. Routes affected by speed restrictions and timetable changes include Great Northern services in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, Greater Anglia and c2c services in Essex. South Western Railway service restrictions in the west of England will follow on 10 August.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) guidance on single-sex spaces will come into effect on 5 August. From that day single-sex toilets, changing-rooms, hospital wards and refuges must be used based on a person’s birth sex, rather than the gender with which they identify. The guidance follows an April 2025 Supreme Court ruling.

The 46th summit of heads of state and government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will begin in Durban, South Africa on 3 August. Leaders from the 16 member states of the SADC will convene under the theme, “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World”.

The US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to visit Kyiv, Ukraine from 5 – 10 August, according to reports. A trip to Moscow is expected to follow the visit to Kyiv, as part of further diplomatic talks. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is also seeking 300 Patriot interceptors before winter, as Ukraine expects Russia to renew its campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

The US Supreme Court is expected on Monday 3 August to issue its response to an emergency appeal by President Donald Trump to allow him to implement changes to mail-in voting ahead of November’s midterms. The President’s administration had filed an emergency appeal asking the US Supreme Court to lift lower court blocks on an executive order targeting mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections.

Brighton & Hove Pride takes place on 1 and 2 August. Pride on the Park will be headlined by Raye on 1 August and Diana Ross, in a UK festival exclusive, on 2 August. The line-up over the weekend also includes Jessie J, Paris Hilton, Self Esteem, RuPaul, Leigh-Anne, Five, Holly Johnson, Melanie C and G Flip.

Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Erykah Badu, YG Marley, Giggs, Fireboy DML and Zion Marley perform in the Diaspora Calling! festival, hosted by Dave Chappelle, at The National Bowl, Milton Keynes on 7 August. This is the first time Lauryn Hill’s festival, celebrating the sounds of the African diaspora across generations through music and arts, has been held in the UK.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe begins on 7 August. Comedians Jack Dee, Rosie Jones, Daniel Sloss, Paul Merton, Mike Wozniak, Ahir Shah, Geoff Norcott, Ania Magliano, Nish Kumar and Jason Byrne are among those performing in more than 4,000 shows at the festival of performing arts until 31 August.
