Westminster politics returns after the summer recess next week with new Prime Minister Andy Burnham facing Tory leader Kemi Badenoch at his first PMQs, on 2 September. Before that, on 1 September, the government is expected to update on its changes to the early prisoner release scheme. A major statement from Burnham on easing business costs is also expected in the parliament next week. The Prime Minister will welcome French president Emmanuel Macron to Downing Street as part of his diplomatic push.

The major elections legislation, Representation of People Bill, is returning to the Commons on 2 September. The bill aims to ban crypto-donations, cap money from overseas and lower the voting age to 16. Dozens of Labour MPs are also expected to press PM Burnham on his election reform stance by supporting an amendment calling for a new commission which would explore changing the first-past-the-post system.

Reform UK are holding their national conference in Birmingham from 3 – 5 September. The party promises that this year’s conference will be the “biggest yet”. Nigel Farage and all prominent party members are due to speak with Jordan Bardella, President of France’s National Rally, addressing delegates on Friday, 4 September.

US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent will host the United States G20 Finance Ministerial in Asheville, North Carolina, from 29 August – 1 September. Finance ministers, central bank governors, deputies, and senior officials from the world’s leading economies will discuss international priorities, including the ‘digital assets ecosystem’, addressing global economic imbalances and debt transparency, modernizing financial regulation and promoting economic growth.

The annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit takes place in Kyrgyzstan from 31 August – 1 September. Chinese President Xi Jinping will be among the leaders attending, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also reported to be going, while Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been invited. SCO leaders will also watch the World Nomad Games.

Iceland holds a referendum on 29 August on whether to open accession talks with the EU. It is a potential first step in joining the 27-nation bloc; if voters reject the proposal, the issue would be put to rest. A yes vote would lead to a years-long negotiating process with the European Commission assessing criteria from financial systems to fisheries, transport networks and agricultural regulations.

American rapper JAŸ-Z performs on his “JAŸ-Z 30” tour at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London on 4 & 5 September. The shows, celebrating 30 years of music, culture and legacy, will be his only UK stop of the year and his first UK solo headline performances in over a decade.

Mark Rylance opens in the world premiere of Darren Raymond’s adaptation of Moliere’s satirical comedy “Tartuffe (Remixed)” at the Marylebone Theatre, London on 4 September. The production is currently booking until 24 October 2026.

Stanley Tucci, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, Richard Osman, Marina Hyde, Robert Peston, Steph McGovern, Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart are among the guests who will take part in Goalhanger: The Rest Is Fest at the Southbank Centre, London from 4 – 6 September.
