A public consultation on the controversial Jackdaw gas field closes on 10 August. Industry sources suggested that Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his new energy secretary, Miatta Fahnbulleh, are considering approving both, Jackdaw and Rosebank – major North Sea oil and gas projects, and an early test for Burnham’s energy and climate policies.

An extradition request case of controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan is due back in court in Miami on 13 August. The Tate brothers have been in Florida jail as they fight extradition to the UK, where the brothers are accused of rape and sex trafficking. The detention hearing will determine whether the Tates should stay in jail during what could be a months-long extradition process.

A by-election in Nigel Farage’s Clacton constituency is due to be held on 13 August. Reform UK leader decided to seek re-election following a row over his undeclared financial support received from long-time ally George Cottrell. All of the major political parties are boycotting the poll with a record number of candidates on the ballot either from smaller political parties, or standing as independents.

A total solar eclipse sweeps across the surface of the Earth on 12 August. At sunrise it will be visible in the far north of Siberia. The ‘path of totality’ then moves across the Arctic Ocean, while the phenomenon will also be visible as a partial solar eclipse across large parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including sections of the northern United States, most of Canada, much of Europe and parts of northwestern Africa.

Jury selection begins in California on 12 August in a major multi-state trial, accusing Meta of designing addictive platforms that harm youth mental health. Multiple states and individual plaintiffs argue that platforms like Facebook and Instagram intentionally use features like infinite scroll and algorithmic feeds to hook young users. Court filings indicate that certain state-level tracks involve demands for immense fiscal penalties.

The US Democratic National Committee summer meeting takes place in Texas on 12 – 15 August. Members will discuss fighting President Donald Trump, as well as which states could be the first to vote in the 2028 presidential nominating process. A handful of states are pushing for the coveted spot of casting ballots first, including the traditional states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

The Weeknd performs the first of five shows on his “After Hours Til Dawn” stadium tour at Wembley Stadium on 14 August. He plays additional shows, with Playboi Carti, on 15, 16, 18 and 19 August.

Actor Bill Nighy takes part in a Q&A at a screening of “& Sons” at Curzon Mayfair, London on 11 August. The darkly comedic drama also stars Noah Jupe, Imelda Staunton, George MacKay, Johnny Flynn and Dominic West.

The 79th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival begins at various Edinburgh venues on 13 August. The festival opens with the international premiere of Louis Paxton’s debut feature, “The Incomer”, with Paxton and actors Domhnall Gleeson, Gayle Rankin, John Hannah and Grant O’Rourke in attendance. Additional guests attending the festival, which runs until 19 August, include Ewan McGregor, Bruce Dern and Kenneth Branagh who receives the inaugural EIFF Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award.
