Andy Burnham, who is a favourite to become the next Prime Minister, will begin to set out his future policies with a series of speeches next week. The newly elected Makerfield MP is expected to deliver an address in the City of London, focusing on economy and devolution. Nominations for the Labour leadership contest will open on 9 July and if Burnham is the only contender, he could be in 10 Downing Street by 17 July.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, will introduce the immigration and asylum bill in the Commons on Tuesday, 30 June. The legislation, first mentioned in the King’s Speech in May, includes controversial plans to increase the forced removal of people refused asylum. It also aims to introduce stringent age checks and limit applications under human rights laws. The bill is likely to face opposition from some Labour, Lib Dem and independent MPs.

The independent investigation into the NHS maternity and neonatal care, led by Baroness Amos, is expected to publish its final report on 30 June. The interim report published in February warned the maternity services in England are failing families, with problems “at every stage” of the maternity journey.

The whole of the European Commission is visiting Ireland on 2 – 3 July to mark the start of the country’s six-month EU presidency, which starts on 1 July. The diplomatic event, led by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is centred in Cork, with discussions focusing on Ireland’s priorities for second half of 2026.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and leaders from the governing centre-right and centre-left coalition parties meet in Berlin on 1 July, to agree on implementing the pension reform package. The proposed legislation aims to stabilise Germany’s retirement system, but has met opposition from both the conservative CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats, and comes as the government attempts to counter its unpopularity and the country’s economic stagnation.

The ECB Forum on Central Banking takes place in Sintra from 29 June – 1 July. Central bank governors, including ECB head Christine Lagarde, academics, financial market representatives, and journalists will exchange views on current policy issues and discuss the forum’s theme for this year, ‘Shaping Europe’s future: innovation, growth and stability‘.

The GQ Heroes summit takes place at Soho Farmhouse, Oxfordshire from 30 June – 2 July. Idris Elba, Rosamund Pike, Graham Norton, Louis Theroux, Christian Louboutin, Jaden Smith, Charles Melton, Johnny Knoxville and Richard Gadd are among those taking part in the annual summit which celebrates game-changers, radical creatives and big ideas. 

Mary-Louise Parker, David Morrissey, Tom Glynn-Carney and Rosie Sheehy open in Simon Stone’s production of “The Oresteia” at the Bridge Theatre, London on 2 July. The production, directed by Stone, is currently booking until 19 September 2026.
