UK Report:

PM Keir Starmer is next week expected to deliver a speech likely to include details of the planned crackdown on under-16s access to social media platforms. And the technology secretary, Liz Kendall, will lay an update in the Commons to the Online Safety Act demanding that social media firms take “quicker action” to remove illegal content during a crisis.

Resident doctors in England will walk out again between 15 and 19 June in their lengthy dispute over better pay and working conditions. This will be the BMA’s  16th strike since 2023 and comes after the new health secretary James Murray branded the union’s demands as “unrealistic and unaffordable”.

Westminster by-election in Makerfield will be held on Thursday, 18 June. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is seeking a return to the Commons where he is then widely expected to launch a challenge Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership. A pair of Westminster by-elections in Scottish constituencies will also be held on Thursday, in Aberdeen South and Arbroath and Broughty Ferry.

World Report:

France will host the next G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains from 15-17 June. Leaders from the US, including President Donald Trump, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK will discuss global economic challenges resulting from the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, support for Ukraine, and European defence. Other leaders have also been invited, including Volodymyr Zelensky.

EU heads of state and government will meet in Brussels on 18-19 June, to discuss the challenging geopolitical context, competitiveness and global economic challenges, and the European Union’s long-term budget for 2028-2034, as well as Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. Leaders are meeting a few days after the European Parliament is expected to approve the EU-US trade deal on 16 June.

The US Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meets in Washington on 16-17 June. It will be Kevin Warsh‘s first meeting as new Fed chair, and may signal how he plans to lead the Federal Reserve and his priorities. Observers suggest the meeting is likely to mark a formal shift away from the Fed’s easing bias, opening the door to potential rate increases later in 2026.
