UK Report:
On Easter Sunday 5 March, members of the royal family will attend their regular church service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. King Charles and Queen Camilla are expected to be joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie will not be attending as the daughters of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson having made “alternative plans”. Sunday will also be the first time that new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, delivers her Easter Sermon.
Despite sharply rising fuel prices, drivers are planning nearly 21 million Easter journeys, according to RAC and INRIX. Traffic will be at its busiest on Good Friday with 3.3m trips. And a number of rail engineering works will be undertaken during Easter. Lines between Milton Keynes Central and London Euston will be closed from 3 April until 8 April. Services between Scotland, the north-west of England, the west Midlands and London will terminate at Milton Keynes Central.
Resident doctors in England are expected to strike for six days from 7 April in the ongoing dispute over pay and jobs. Formerly known as junior doctors, they last took industrial action for five days in December. Earlier this week Prime Minister Starmer gave the BMA a 48-hour ultimatum to call off the strike or face losing 1,000 extra training places. Talks still continue to avert the action.
World Report:
Pope Leo XIV marks his first Easter as the head of the Catholic Church. On Holy Saturday 4 April, he will celebrate the Easter Vigil Mass, and on 5 April will give the annual Easter “urbi et orbi blessing” from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Leo will mark Easter Monday, also called “Monday of the Angel,” by praying the Regina Caeli at noon from a window of the Apostolic Palace.
US Vice President JD Vance will visit Hungary from 7 – 8 April. He will offer his support for the re-election of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as the country goes to the polls on 12 April. It comes after President Donald Trump endorsed Orbán in a social media post, urging people to “get out and vote” for the incumbent.
The US Court of International Trade is due to hear arguments on 10 April on the legality of President Donald Trump’s new tariffs. It comes after Mr Trump imposed a 10% global levy under the Trade Act of 1974, after the Supreme Court said he couldn’t impose tariffs under an international emergencies law.
