UK Report:

On Monday 23 March, Sir Keir Starmer will appear before the Commons liaison committee for the fifth time in his tenure as Prime Minister. The committee has identified the international situation and defence as the central theme of this session. Questions will focus on defence, the Middle East, the impact of the conflict in Iran on the UK’s economic security.

On Wednesday 25 March, Sarah Mullally will be enthroned as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. The installation of the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury will take place at Canterbury Cathedral on the Feast of the Annunciation. It comes after Mullally, currently serving as Bishop of London, accepted the invitation to replace Justin Welby.

ONS will release its February inflation figures on 25 March. Previous figures showed inflation falling to 3%, mostly in line with analyst expectations. However, economists are warning that the US-Iran conflict may mean inflation will rise again in the UK, with the OBR watchdog saying the economy could face a “very significant” hit. The Bank of England now expects inflation to be close to 3.5% in March.

World Report: 

The next hearing in the trial of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores take place in New York on 26 March. They are indicted on charges of narco-terrorism, conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering, and corruption. Maduro and his wife have been jailed in Brooklyn after US forces seized them from Caracas in January.

The second round of municipal elections takes place in France on 22 March. Many eyes are on the battle for Paris, where Rachida Dati, of the centre-right Republicans, hopes to wrest control of the city from the centre-left Socialist party, which has run the French capital for the last quarter-century. Dati goes head-to-head with Emmanuel Grégoire.

The Boao Forum for Asia for 2026 takes place in China from 24 – 27 March. With China, Japan, Australia and ASEAN countries among its members, the ‘Asian Davos’ promotes regional economic integration and brings together Chinese and foreign leaders, policymakers, business executives and academics.

This year’s Teenage Cancer Trust Gigs, curated by The Cure’s Robert Smith, take place at the Royal Albert Hall, London from 23 – 29 March. The gigs kick off with Elbow on 23 March, followed by An Evening of Comedy on 24 March, Mogwai on 25 March, Manic Street Preachers on 26 March, My Bloody Valentine on 27 March, Garbage on 28 March and Wolf Alice on 29 March.

Eddie Kadi and Eve host the MOBO Awards, taking place in Manchester for the first time at Co-op Live, on 26 March. Performers at the ceremony include Tiwa Savage, Olivia Dean, Estelle, Slick Rick, Wiley, Chip, Nolay, Scorcher, D Double E, Aitch, Myles Smith, Shenseea and FLO. Among the honourees are Pharrell Williams with the MOBO Global Songwriter Award and Slick Rick with the MOBO Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ben Platt and Rachel Zegler star in a very special new concert staging of Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years” at the London Palladium from 24 – 29 March. The 25th anniversary shows will be directed by Jason Robert Brown who also takes to the stage to conduct.
